The Rugby season is nearly here - camera ready

The weather has turned Hot again BUT the Rugby Season is NOT far away
I have to be honest, 2 years ago I tried as a Sports Phptographer to shoot Rugby, AND I didn’t think I would like it, I mean it is so different to shooting in a Studio. Camera settings and Shooting styles are all different - and of Course lighting. In a Studio we use Supplementary lighting such as Flash BUT for Rugby on Outside Pitches, the lighting is all Ambient. Basically what that means is that as a Photographer we have little control over the Sun, the Weather and the Clouds, which of course sets the available amount of light, and the Photographer needs to be able to utrilise whatever Ambient light is available to get ‘ The Shots ‘. of quite fast moving subject/s. Yes Rugby players do move pretty quick..
Here I am two years on about to go into my 3rd seasonand I actually really like being a Sports Photographer - Shooting Rugby - and I’m looking forward to the start of the new rugby season.

As a Sports Photographer I shoot local Rugby
Whilst I do shoot away games I mostly need to work my availablity in with other Photography Work - so I try to get to most of the Home games. Which is good as I cover my local Team Matches of Watton Rugby here in South Norfolk. The team did really well last year with not only going up in the ranking for this new season BUT also winning the local Salva Cup. So some well earned drinkies and celebrations were had at the end of last season of which I was really pleased to be included in. Fingers crossed for the new season success.

Preparing for the latest Rugby Season may seem easy
However there is an amount of work that goes on ( not that I know it all ), but New players may be arriving in the team. Existing and may be new Sponsors may be included in the players strip and therefore new team kit will need to be included in the Headshots for each of the players. Last year that went really well - From memory I did 22 players headshots in one evening and they at the moment are still the current versions. BUT I haven’t had any new season briefing yet - Watch this space.
Do I like being a sports photographer
I think the answer to that is YES especially for Rugby, although I have also dabbled with Football and Hockey ( Mens & Ladies ), and they may be something that I develop with this year - sometimes there is just not enough time to do it all, at least not enough Saturdays but one thing is for sure if we have a late summer this year, as it’s beginning to look like rugby will be hot - in oh so many ways..
