How do we cope with the Variation of Summer
Summer & as a Freelance photographer I need to be able to cope with many different situations for all seasons in the UK. This of course means the coldest winter days Inside or Outside ( there is of course some technical limitations to consider with some of the equipment I need to use such as Camera’s if it’s really cold ), BUT also the hottest of days in our disperate Summer.
And now It’s Summer it’s Hot Hot Hot for Photographer & Weddings
Yes even though in the UK it seems it’s been forever raining for most of the year so far ( we are now in the last week of June 2024 ), it is now 30c + and it’s a bit of a shock probably to us all even though we know it should be and is likely to be and we’d like it to be hot & dryer this time of the year.

For a Photographer having to cope with the variation of Light at an Event or wedding this can be a real pain - As an example you set your camera up to take a key shot and the sun is covered by cloud - and THEN the moment you take the shot the Sun comes out and your shot is Over exposed - Damn. BUT then good photographers should be covered and capable of dealing with that. BUT I would say that even the most capable of photographers get caught out occasionally, after all we are only human.
Freelance Photography for Christenings
I had the pleasure of capturing a double Christening recently for a couple of 5 year old twins. Absolutely beautiful & lovely family BUT the variation of light quality from inside their house to the outside to the Church was phenominal.

How beautiful is this for a Photographer
This was a dream event - The family & God Parents & friends were all lovely, It certainly was a day to remember. The weather was great BUT variable and the light was ok in the church BUT around the Font was quite dim - so had to use supplemental light - which worked out ok BUT I always worry that it can appear to be more harse that ambient light. However there is always a payoff in photography - Do you want nicely out of focus backgrounds ( small depth of field ), or do you want to ensure everybody in a group is in focus. Do you want everyone to be sharp & crisp or do you want to use just ambient light with a slow shutter etc etc..

As a Freelance photographer I have the skills to deal with what ever lighting requirement is thrown at me.
BUT that also comes with having to choose whatever equipment & supplemental lighting is most appropriate to produce the shots my clients demands. Hence I travel to most destinations in my van which allows me to carry the great variation of modifiers and lighting that may be required or can be adapted to the conditions. Please note : This equipment is NOT left in my van overnight.
As a Freelance Photographer - I just love what I do
I do I really do - BUT I’m not saying it’s all easy BUT that’s why experts exist in any craft or skill as not everyone can do it and that’s what I think I am becoming - an expert - AND a Story Teller - BUT more to come on that in my next blog….
